MAPUTO (AFP) – Several members of the Madagascan prime minister's staff were arrested Wednesday in Mozambique on their way to talks aimed at ending Madagascar's political crisis, said police and sources close to the mediation.

"They were arrested because they entered the country with arms without permission," said Pedro Cossa, Mozambique's national police spokesman.

Cossa said he could not say how many people were detained but said all were being held in Maputo.

Prime Minister Monja Roindefo's secretary, bodyguards and aide-de-camp for the Maputo talks were among the detainees, said a member of the delegation.

The detainees who numbered either four or five arrived in Mozambique earlier Wednesday, said a source close to the mediation.

Mozambique is playing host this week to power-sharing talks between Madagascar's top power-brokers, who agreed earlier this month to name a transitional government to return the country to constitutional rule.

The prime minister arrived here Monday with the delegation of Andry Rajoelina, the current leader of the Indian Ocean island.

Madagascar was thrown into crisis in March when Rajoelina, the former mayor of the capital Antananarivo, ousted president Marc Ravalomanana with military backing following weeks of violent protests.
